This time last year we faced a rather bleak Christmas in hospital. So we have been really looking forward to spending Christmas at home with Angela as a family.
Angela has been mostly well since her birthday in November. But she has had several boughts of high temperatures. In fact I’m writing this at 2am on Christmas Day because Ange woke up in quite a state. Her temperature was high again and she had pulled out her nasal gastric tube so her feed had spilled all over her bed. Jen and I have just spent the past 20 minutes cleaning her up and her bed, replacing the tube and settling her back to sleep. These high temperatures seem to be becoming quite regular. Every couple of weeks she’ll get them for a few days then settle back down.
When Angela isn’t battling high temperatures she is still having great difficulty with her digestion. She often spends several hours in discomfort when passing a stool. This can be very stressful for her and us.
On the upside we are seeing more and more of Angela’s personality. She has started “chatting” in the past couple of weeks and now says “da da da”, “bwa bwa bwa” and several varations. This has seemed to open up a whole new world of communication. We love having little conversations with her and she seems to love being able to chat away back to us. The most beautiful thing to see is Lydia’s interaction with Angela. Lydia has ALWAYS adored her little sister and treated her with love and respect. She plays peekaboo with Angela and reads her stories. The following video is a perfect example of this. It was recorded early in the morning and straight onto a computer. So Lydia is singing slowly because she is watching herself in the computer screen.
In the past month we have moved to the Blue Mountains. It’s very peaceful here and we have a beautiful view towards the south-east of Sydney. Our home has more space than our apartment in the inner west. We are also living much closer to Jen’s parents. I (Paul) am working from home full time from an office in the garage. So it’s been nice to be around the family more. Jen has continued her work from home job coordinating drama examinations. She plans to return to her university study from home next year for her secondary teaching qualification. We are going to the church where we got married, Jen grew up and her parents now go. Although we miss our old church and friends there we have been able to connect with a local community immediately, which has been great. We have also connected with some of the wildlife! A couple of weeks ago we were stunned to see a posse of peacocks walking on our roof!
So Merry Christmas to all from The Richards. We are still here even if we don’t post as often as we used to. And we really appreciate all your prayers, love and support. Thanks to all our family and friends for your support this year. Please leave comments below as we love to read your messages.

Merry Christmas guys.
It’s great to see footage of the children. Lidia has grown so much since she left our Melbourne play group and Angela seems so alert and happy in her sister’s arms.
Keep us posted.

Dear Paul, Jen, Lydia and Angie,
Thank you for the Christmas update. We trust that you had a good Christmas Day after the very early start.
So pleased to know that Paul has the flexibility of a home office and that you now have Jen’s folks close by. We think of you often and Mandy in particular always remembers her little Australian cousins in her prayers each evening.
With love and warmest wishes for a blessed Christmas (Well, it is 5:50pm herein South Africa so I guess you are now in the early hours of Dec 26 – may you have a restful night’s sleep)
love,
Richard, Shirley, Joanne & Mandy

I’m sitting here with the biggest grin on my face. How sweet is that video! Does nothing phase Angela? And Lydia, LOVE the twinkle fingers.
Yay for the Mountains … though I’ve just watched the Sydney to Hobart fleet sail past my window so the coast is pretty nice too!
Think of you often.

Hi there,
It’s lovely to read about Angela and see the video of Lydia singing to her – Angie looking up at her big sister to see what she is doing is adorable! Glad to hear all is going well at Richmond and I hope that Christmas Day was wonderful. Hopefully we can catch up again in the new year.
All the best and lots of love,
Kati

What an “upgrade” from last year. Such a blessing to have Angela home for Christmas. Another reminder of all that true-meaning-of-Christmas stuff we hear about this time of year!
What beautiful girls. We miss you all so much. I really hope Lydia and Isaac can have a play in 2009.
Will talk to you soon.
Love,
Denyse, Chris, and Isaac

Hi guys, you pobably dont remember me but I used to work at Bear Cottage as an assistant in nursing. I just wanted you to know that I often think of you guys and was just talking to my housemate about the amazing family you are, so I jumped online to find out how everything was going. My thoughts are with you, and one of my fondest Bear Cottage memories is having Lydia’s birthday party out on the deck.
Take it easy,
Kate

We are really sad that we didn’t get to catch up with you over Christmas, it means we likely won’t see you til Christmas 09 now! But we do look forward to that and you have such great posts and we get to see you on Skype so that really helps. Angie looked very cute in her birthday dress and with her big sister. I did notice what looks like a graze on Lydia’s face and it made me smile remembering how even when she was really young she would try to dive off things – completely fearless! Hope you had a good break recently and that things are going well. We don’t have much news except to say that Singaporeans work too long. I was about to comment about what news you get in Sydney and then remembered Paul’s job! It has saddened me recently to hear about Thailand towing boat loads of Rohinya (Burmese) Refugees out to sea and abandoning them to die and lots of racism and poor human rights in our surrounding countries here. I think Justin and I are very much in culture shock a lot of the time. We count ourselves very blessed to have jobs and be financially secure amidst this downturn and to be treated well almost anywhere we go. In fact we are treated exceptionally well as “angmo’s” (literally red haired ghosts!). Hope you are enjoying your beautiful girls and the scenic blue mountains.
Lots of Love and Prayers as often as we are being godly (working on improving that)
Justin. Michelle and Cooper but mainly Michelle.

Hi – this is a late response to this one as I only just checked your blog – it’s been lovely to actually talk to Jen a couple of times in the last couple of months!
It brought tears to my eyes and then made me laugh out loud as Angie slipped off Lydia’s lap….! She’s a tough little nut. Lydia’s singing is lovely – you are training her up well!
Take care,
Karen
